Description

The Washington Higher Education Secretariat (the Secretariat) was formed on October 5, 1962 to serve as a forum for the chief executive officers in the higher education association community. At present, the Secretariat is composed of 50 national higher education associations representing the different sectors and functions in postsecondary institutions. The American Council on Education is the coordinating and convening body for the Secretariat and provides a forum for discussion on education issues of national and local importance.

The Secretariat is governed by a steering committee that sets the agendas for an annual retreat and monthly meetings and serves as an oversight body when issues arise and appropriate action is needed. From time to time, the Secretariat forms special ad hoc committees to work on special projects. The Secretariat meetings are open to chief executive officers of member associations and a "no substitute" rule is maintained.
